Position Summary

The Armed Officer will report directly to the Shift Sergeant, or in the absence of the Sergeant the Shift Corporal, and will be responsible for carrying out the basic security functions of the university; including but not limited to; the protection of life and property, maintenance of public order, prevention of crime, response to emergency situations, diffusing difficult situations, securing buildings and enforcing university rules and regulations.

The job of an Armed Officer is also physically demanding, requiring the stamina and strength to work assigned shifts under all environmental conditions, drive a motor vehicle, ride a bicycle, perform foot patrol, stand or sit for extended periods of time, defend themselves and others in actual physical combat, occasionally lift and move people or heavy objects, climb or jump physical obstacles and run various distances.

At the direction of the Director of Campus Security the Armed Officer will be assigned to either the Department’s Campus Patrol Division or the Museum Services Division.

Characteristic Duties

  • Informs the Shift Sergeant and/or Corporal of any unusual situations or circumstances that come to their attention
  • Patrols assigned areas making inquiries and inspection oriented towards protecting of life and property, preventing crime and accidents
  • Observes and reports any faulty or unsafe equipment and/or conditions
  • Properly investigates all assigned incidents and document the findings of the investigation on department report forms
  • Accurately completes all necessary administrative forms and reports
  • Enforces university parking and traffic regulations by the issuance of parking and traffic citations
  • Diffuses difficult situations and will accompany unauthorized individuals off university owned and controlled property
  • Makes crucial decisions under stress, and is held accountable for the end result
  • Determines “probable cause” and makes arrests of individuals in compliance with Oklahoma State Law and department policy
  • Determines when, and under what circumstances, to use non-lethal or deadly force
  • May be subjected to bodily harm with the possibility of loss of life
  • May be subjected to public criticism and social pressures that create stress
  • May encounter both health and safety hazards
  • Testifies clearly and truthfully during campus conduct hearings and/or court proceedings
  • Provides emergency first aid to injured or ill person(s) and assists in the transportation of these persons when necessary
  • Admits authorized person(s) into locked buildings, facilities and rooms during business and non-business hours
  • Responds to building alarms
  • Responds to calls for assistance
  • Assists stranded motorists by jumping dead batteries, changing flat tires and pushing disabled vehicles
  • Provides crowd and/or traffic control during scheduled activities and/or emergency situations
  • Provides security during the transportation of large sums of cash and/or other valuables
  • Provides basic information, direction and assistance to university personnel, students and visitors
  • Occasionally remains on-duty, past the normal work shift, in the event of an emergency situation
  • Occasionally works outside the normal work hours because of increased work load or the staffing of special events
  • Any other duties as assigned by the Corporal, Sergeant, and/or Director of Campus Security

Minimum Qualifications

Be at least twenty-one (21) years of age; Excellent Vision, requirements; Far visual acuity of at least 20/30 in each eye with or without corrective lenses; Peripheral vision without correction of 140 degrees in the horizontal median of each eye; Vision capable of distinguishing basic color groups against a favorable background; High school diploma or equivalent certificate; A current Oklahoma Driver’s License or the ability to obtain one before appointment; Current Oklahoma CLEET Certification in; Phase 1 (Basic), Phase 2 (Officer)  and Phase 4 (Firearms); Ability to maintain the requirements set forth in 59 O.S., section 1750.1 et seq., The Oklahoma Security Guard and Private Investigator Act; Proficiency utilizing a computer with Microsoft Word and Excel software; Excellent written and verbal communication skills; The ability to meet and maintain the firearms qualification standards of the University of Tulsa Department of Campus Security; The ability to successfully meet and maintain the physical fitness standards of the University of Tulsa Department of Campus Security (See attachment); The ability to successfully complete a pre-employment medical examination, vision screening and drug screening.

Preferred Qualifications

Meeting the listed minimum qualifications and/or; University of Tulsa Department of Campus Security Officers who have been separated from the university for less than one year and left employment in good standing; Certified Police Officers that have separated from their previous agency in good standing.
