Position Summary

The Manager of Public Programs reports directly to the Director of Learning and Community Engagement. In collaboration with the Director of Learning and Community Engagement, develops, plans, and implements public programs, including lectures, symposia, cinema screenings, performances, workshops, in-gallery artist-centric programs, and special projects at Gilcrease Museum. This is a full-time, two-year funded position. Identifying funding to continue this position is a museum priority./td>

Characteristic Duties

  • Establishes an innovative program schedule that reflects and builds on the Gilcrease unique identity as a museum of art and history with a diverse collection of objects that narrate the North America experience
  • Working with the Director of Learning and Community Engagement, develops and implements a robust and diverse roster of programs that foster engagement with new, underrepresented and established audiences for both large and small-scale programs
  • Builds public engagement through both traditional and innovative programs that connect the Museum and its activities to the culture at large and offers participants the opportunity to learn through a variety of avenues from participatory and experiential to academic and scholarly activities
  • Identifies strong threads in contemporary culture that tie into the Museum’s core story and creates a dynamic forum to explore these developments
  • Collaborates with and supports visual and performing artists, scholars and other presenters through traditional and interdisciplinary practices
  • Arranges travel, lodging, and payment for presenters
  • Secures speaker agreements and maintain files
  • Collects, analyses data, evaluates attendance and level of engagement and learning from programs and revise strategies in response to findings as needed
  • Collaborates with marketing staff to promote Museum programs and develops educational resources and materials for the website including program podcasts and webinars; contributes to museum publications, publicity, and social media
  • Works with other Museum departments to effectively plan and improve working methods for the successful delivery of public programs, particularly AV/IT production, Membership, Special Events, Development, Volunteer Services, and Physical Plant
  • Works with the education team, curators and other Museum and university staff in researching, developing and producing interpretive materials for varied constituencies (i.e., adults, college students, volunteers, senior citizens and the general public) as part of public programs
  • Develops, manages and tracks program budgeting on a regular basis
  • Serves as a departmental liaison to other departments, the university and external partners in coordinating program schedules and calendars
  • Performs any other duties as assigned/needed

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited college or university in Art History, History, Visual Arts, Anthropology, Education or a related field; strong grounding in the history, culture and creative expressions of North America; three years of experience producing public programs in a museum or cultural organization; demonstrated creativity in developing new models for programs and visitor engagement; strong writing and communication skills; professional and collaborative personality; excellent organizational skills and attention to detail; budgeting, billing and record keeping experience; flexibility and sensitivity to working with diverse audiences; proficient in PC or Mac software applications, including Word, Excel, and Outlook; and ability to work evening and weekend hours for programs.

Preferred Qualifications

Advanced degree from an accredited college or university in Art History, History, Visual Arts, Anthropology, Education or related field preferred. Multilingual ability, particularly in Spanish, is a plus.
