Position Summary

​The Security Dispatcher position is skilled emergency service work that involves receiving emergency and non-emergency requests for public safety services, determining the nature/urgency of calls, initiating security or other emergency personnel action and maintaining close contact with field units to monitor response and needed support requirements.

This position requires a considerable degree of initiative and independent judgment, within procedural boundaries, and at times may be required to respond and deal with emotional, disturbed and sometimes abusive people in a variety of situations. Work may be done separately or in conjunction with other Security Dispatchers under the direction of the Senior Dispatcher, Support Services Captain or in their absence the Shift Sergeant.

Characteristic Duties

  • Receives and responds to emergency and non-emergency situations including calls from the public, university offices, patrol officers and other emergency services agencies via the telephone, radio systems and computer
  • Processes and evaluates information received and prioritizes calls and dispatches required patrol officers and/or other emergency services agencies
  • Monitors and coordinates activities and assignments of patrol officers and other security personnel via the radio and security computer systems
  • Maintains status and location of all on-duty patrol officers and other security personnel
  • Utilizes and monitors technology such as computers, radio systems, telephones, fire alarms, intrusion/panic alarms, surveillance cameras, emergency broadcast and text messaging systems and other communication equipment
  • Creates and maintains automated or manual logs of public safety communications activity
  • Accesses and enters sensitive information into University databases for investigative purposes and/or University related business
  • Maintains appropriate security and confidentiality of information created or encountered in the performance of their assigned duties
  • Stays informed of all departmental regulations, policies and procedures
  • Stays abreast of all events that are occurring on campus during their assigned shift, paying particular attention to those events that attract large crowds
  • Advises the on-coming Security Dispatchers and other department personnel of all the facts and conditions, relative to the campus and its community, in order to facilitate the continuity of the department’s operations
  • Provides general campus information to the public via telephone inquiries
  • Occasionally remains at the Communication Center past their normal work shift in the event of an emergency situation
  • Occasionally works outside their normal work hours because of increased work load at the Communication Center
  • Complies with all rules and regulations of the Federal Communication Commission
  • Any other duties as assigned by the Director or Captain

Minimum Qualifications

​High school diploma or equivalent certificate; meet the hiring employment requirements of the University of Tulsa;
Excellent vision required; the ability to successfully complete a pre-employment drug screening; the ability to successfully complete a pre-employment back-ground and criminal history check

Preferred Qualifications

​Prior radio communication experience within a Law Enforcement or Emergency Services organization; knowledge of public safety methods and practices; knowledge of computer technology and equipment; knowledge of the English language for spelling and proper word usages; skill in multi-tasking-coordinating simultaneous mental, manual and visual activities; skill in observing situations analytically and objectively and relaying details accurately; skill in communicating using two-way radio and telephone equipment; skill in operating a variety of communication equipment effectively; skill in reading and interpreting maps to determine campus locations and jurisdictional boundaries; ability to speak clearly and concisely; ability to think clearly and act quickly in emergencies; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with department personnel, university students, staff, faculty, outside emergency service agencies and the public; ability to meet attendance schedule with dependability and consistency

Hours

Shift work, hours and days may vary; may be subject to call back in the event of an emergency or because of increased work load at the Communication Center​
