School of Language & Literature

The School of Language & Literature at The University of Tulsa offers World Language courses in Chinese, French, German, Greek, Latin, Russian, and Spanish at beginning, intermediate, and advanced levels. Beginning and intermediate courses are primarily language-based. More advanced courses are designed for students to acquire insights into world cultures through films, literature, linguistics, and journalistic analyses of current events. To know which level best suits the language proficiency of entry students, an online placement test helps avoid unnecessary courses.

Because of the university’s commitment to interdisciplinary education, students can combine a major in a specific field of study with a major or minor in a world language. Ultimately, interdisciplinary degrees prepare students to better compete in an increasingly global workplace. Majors and minors in a world language can combine their coursework to study abroad.

Language rights at home and abroad

Professor Eduardo Faingold, from The University of Tulsa School of Language and Literature, recently published a book on language policies in Scandinavian countries. Titled "Language Rights and the Law in Scandinavia," the book explores language development and policies in Sweden, Denmark, Norway, Iceland, the Faroe Islands, and Greenland. Faingold, a renowned expert in Spanish and linguistics, has authored numerous articles and is concurrently working on a book examining the Spanish language in contact with Hebrew and Yiddish across Latin America, Europe, and Israel.
