Department of Media Studies

Activist. Creative director. Critic. Journalist. Media scholar. Producer. Publicist. Your dream career in media awaits you. Welcome to the Department of Media Studies. Our students prepare for careers in the 21st century world of media through invaluable coursework and hands-on experience that blends media theory and history, creative and critical production, public relations and advertising, journalism and multimedia storytelling, and other fields.

I was allowed the opportunity to change majors while still working toward my goals, and most importantly, I was able to discover my creative voice, which has turned out to be instrumental in my career.

Ryan Allen, (BA ’08) Director of Storytelling & Exhibit Management at Oklahoma Museum of Popular Culture

    • World Class Research

UTulsa's media faculty are excellent teachers addicted to world class research. We publish our scholarly articles in top journals and presses as well as our public-facing pieces on popular multimedia outlets. With roughly ten books in as many years, our faculty books showcase new knowledge on topics as diverse as the craft of communication, how diets were first sold to men, how method acting became as white as the big screen, how elections became rituals, how First Nations people have been photographed and visualized, why the Soviets did not develop an internet, how tech became (too) big, on language in the age of search engines, and on how to write a lot--and well. Our faculty model our core beliefs: the media saturated world is driven by the art of the script and the story, the commitment that true stories change life, and our shared conviction in the higher arts of inquiry.
