Summer Speech and Language Groups

Hurricane Aphasia Intensive

The Hurricane Aphasia Intensive is a transformative summer program designed for individuals living with aphasia, a communication disorder most often caused by stroke or brain injury. Hosted at the Center for Individuals with Physical Challenges, this intensive immersion experience combines evidence-based speech-language therapy with meaningful, real-world activities that spark connection, confidence and communication in ways traditional clinical settings cannot.

Over the course of the program, participants engage in multiple hours of speech therapy each day, woven into purposeful activities, including art therapy, gardening, rock climbing, group activities and more. Every session is led by licensed speech-language pathologists and supported by trained volunteers and peer mentors, many of whom have lived experience with aphasia. Communication is the goal in everything we do, but the way we get there looks nothing like a clinic.
