University Accreditation

The University of Tulsa is a private not-for-profit institution which has maintained accreditation by the Higher Learning Commission since 1929. The Commission’s accreditation covers the certificate, bachelors, masters, and doctorate degrees awarded by TU.

Institutions of higher education in the United States seek accreditation through two types of accreditation agencies: institutional and specialized. Institutional accreditation agencies are classified as regional and national.

Regional accreditation agencies are recognized by the U.S. Department of Education to accredit degree granting colleges and universities. There are six regions of the U.S. in which regional agencies operate. The regional accreditation agencies have similar standards for accrediting colleges and universities.

Regional accreditation validates the quality of an institution as a whole and evaluates multiple aspects of an institution ranging from its academic offerings, governance and administration, mission, finances, and resources.

The Higher Learning Commission is a regional accreditation agency that accredits degree granting institutions of higher education that are based in the 19-state North Central region of the United States. Institutions that HLC accredits are evaluated against HLC’s Criteria for Accreditation and Assumed Practices, a set of standards that institutions must meet to receive and/or maintain accredited status.

Program Accreditation

Specialized accreditation normally applies to the evaluation of programs, departments, or schools which usually are parts of a total collegiate or other postsecondary institution; most often these programs that lead to certification or licensure. To receive specialized accreditation, the college, school, or program must demonstrate that it has relevant content, qualified faculty, and adequate resources to meet rigorous accreditation standards set for a specific field, discipline, or profession. By earning this accreditation, the academic unit demonstrates that it has met the standards that prepare students for advancement in the field.

Specialized accreditation is a valuable and important verification that the specific program meets professional standards. Following is the list of organizations that have accredited our programs:
