Our Academic Philosophy
——————————
We believe that young minds learn best when they are actively involved in initiating their education. Far from being passive recipients of knowledge, students at University School are active and engaged participants in their learning process. Teachers must be much more than purveyors of information: they must be skilled designers of learning environments and experiences constructed to maximize the student’s opportunities to explore, iterate, and arrive at meaningful understanding on their own, with as much agency and independence as possible for each developmental level.
While there are essential content and skills that need to be mastered in school, the signature ingredient of University School is our commitment to transcend the assumed aspects of school in order to transform lives through the gift of a lifelong love for learning. Our aspirations demand a balance of several strands of learning: traditional curricular learning to build core knowledge based on teacher expertise; agential learning that moves beyond the teacher to encompass the whole student through intentionally designed experiences; interdependent learning focused on collaboration on work that matters in which each student’s effort is essential to success; and community learning that privileges relationships and fosters a responsibility to make the world better.
