TU Scholars Program

Bayless Plaza with orange leaves on the treesWhat is a TU Scholar?

All TU students receive a thorough grounding in the liberal arts in order to foster critical and creative thought, effective communication and cultural competency.

On top of that foundation, TU Scholars combine two or more areas of academic focus, uniting the deep thought and humanistic inquiry of the liberal arts with strong technical, clinical or professional skills.

The TU Scholar experience prepares students for a broad range of careers and develops the cognitive flexibility required to adapt to a changing global environment.

Exciting programming is being planned for fall 2022. Students who are interested in adding the TU Scholar experience to their academic journey should notify their student success coach.

All TU Scholars:

  • Combine a major or minor in liberal arts (such as humanities, fine arts, social sciences or natural sciences) with a major or minor in professional studies (such as engineering, business or nursing) or complete an interdisciplinary major or minor. A complete list of programs is available online.
  • Complete an experiential learning project.
  • Complete an interdisciplinary capstone.

Student-Centered Interdisciplinary Collaboration

TU Scholars work closely with faculty across disciplines to combine their areas of interest and solve complex problems.

Intellectual and Social Community

TU Scholars meet regularly to share their research, network with recruiters and alumni and celebrate interdisciplinary exchange.

Better Career Outcomes

TU Scholars develop job-ready technical skills, critical thinking, cultural competency and emotional intelligence, giving them a competitive edge on the job market. A liberal arts education provides the skills and knowledge employers value as important for career success.

Faculty Views

“In today’s world, it is important for college graduates to possess both a well-rounded education and marketable skills. TU Scholars answers these needs by immersing students in the liberal arts and professional training. Our graduates are able to think creatively as well as analytically; communicate effectively; and work with people of all backgrounds.”  Mike Troilo, Collins College of Business

“Through the integration of liberal arts and professional studies courses, with interdisciplinary hands-on research, the TU Scholars program challenges students to address complex problems from multiple perspectives, developing their ability to identify broad patterns and connections among diverse topics. These creative- and critical-thinking skills allow students to see the world through new viewpoints, highlighting the importance of interdisciplinary collaboration.” Danielle Macdonald, Kendall College of Arts and Sciences

“Addressing complex issues requires critical thinking and interdisciplinary problem-solving. The TU Scholars program is designed to create a learning environment where students think beyond their chosen fields of study and approach real-world problems with unique and dynamic perspectives that allow for outside-of-the-box innovation.” Rachel Hildebrand, Oxley College of Health Sciences

“I am excited that my engineering students will have more opportunities to combine a significant liberal arts experience with their technical degree through the TU Scholars program. TU’s engineering students and other STEM professionals have a thirst for this knowledge, and it will help them immensely in their careers.” John Henshaw, College of Engineering and Natural Sciences

“The TU Scholars program empowers students to pursue the full range of their interests from every corner of the campus and to turn those interests into a professional path. Students can craft their own boundary-busting plan that combines liberal arts and professional studies or follow one of TU’s interdisciplinary majors or minors. Either way, students get the full benefits of being part of a university with top-notch liberal arts and professional departments.” Betsy Rosenblatt, College of Law
