Returning to school

As the break comes to an end, help your student look forward to the upcoming semester. Ask about friends or roommates your student will be glad to see back at school. Talk about challenges the student experienced during the first semester and discuss strategies to handle these situations or concerns. Encourage your student to ask for help from campus services as needed, such as the International Student Services office, Health Center, International Student Success Center, and Center for Student Academic Support.

January weather

January is usually the coldest month in Oklahoma. Temperatures range from a daytime high of 8.9°C to a nighttime low of -2.8°C. Occasionally sidewalks and roads will be icy, but snow is not common. Remind your student to travel with a coat.

Upcoming international events

During the spring semester, several events highlight TU’s international student community. The “Mr. and Ms. International” competition invites individual students to share their talents. International Night features performances from student groups to showcase their country and culture. Other events hosted by international student groups include a Chinese New Year celebration, Saudi Night and Omani Night. Your student may want to pack something special to wear to these events. Many students choose to wear traditional or national clothing styles to these events, while others choose an outfit according to their personal taste.

New Year’s resolution: Stay active and healthy

January is a perfect time for your student to get to know the Collins Fitness Center. Encourage your student to explore TU’s 67,129 square-foot modern facility dedicated to student health, recreation, and fitness. The fitness center has workout equipment, basketball courts, exercise classes, and organizes intramural sports competitions. The fitness center is an excellent way for students to manage stress and maintain personal health throughout the academic year.
