Cultural adjustment

During the first few weeks in the U.S., your student is likely to feel excited about new experiences. This is sometimes called the “honeymoon” phase of cultural adjustment. Although your student might sometimes feel uncomfortable or confused by things they are not used to, the new environment is also interesting and fun to discover.

Tips for helping your student through homesickness

It’s normal for your student to be excited about new experiences and still feel a little homesick.

  • Help them understand homesickness is normal.
  • Suggest they explore the city of Tulsa.
  • Encourage them to get involved with student organizations.
  • Helping others can make them feel better – volunteer with True Blue Neighbors.
  • Talk with other students or with professionals on campus.
  • Stay positive! It will get better!

International Student Success Center

  • An area for English conversation practice
