Area of Study: Education

Humane Letters

The University of Tulsa’s Humane Letters program invites students to join a centuries-old conversation about what makes for a meaningful and well-lived life.

Through participation in our Socratic-style seminars, students will become exceptional in the arts of communication and dialectic, learn to respectfully challenge themselves and others, and become more discerning with respect to the most important intellectual and ethical issues that confront us as human beings and citizens today.

Humane Letters majors are automatically in the Honors Program. The major is for those who want an especially deep engagement with classic texts and the perennial questions that matter most to us as individuals and members of a greater community, including those that inform the greatest scientific discoveries and artistic creations of our inherited tradition.

Political Science

Explore themes of justice, rights, and the relationship between the state and the individual by connecting perennial ideas to contemporary challenges.

Delving into domestic and foreign politics by examining ideas and analyzing governments and political trends, our comprehensive programs focus on three core areas of strength: American politics, international studies, and legal theory. Under the mentorship of our expert faculty, through challenging courses and hands-on research, you will probe political problems and governance from all angles, leading you to develop creative, policy-based solutions. Combining theory and methods to study institutions, systems, and policies that make up public life, UTulsa encourages responsible and active citizenship with a wide range of professional opportunities and career paths to opt for.

It is ideal for students interested in both liberal arts and professional studies, providing a broad background in various disciplines for a nuanced understanding of how organizations work. This major prepares students for entry-level jobs in businesses, non-profits, and government agencies and has been popular and successful in equipping students with knowledge and skills applicable to diverse career paths.

UTulsa students pursuing teacher certification specialize in elementary education, instrumental or vocal music, English, French, German, Spanish, art, social studies, or mathematics. Those who aspire to teach at the middle or high school level double major in education and a degree field matched to their area of specialization. All education majors benefit from early and extensive field and clinical experiences in local public schools and the University School, a private PK-8 school on the UTulsa campus. All education majors spend their final semester student teaching in local schools under the supervision of mentor teachers and UTulsa faculty.
