Commencement FAQ

  • Carry-In and Clear Bag Policy

    The clear bag policy will be in effect for graduation ceremonies. A detailed list of permitted items is available here. All carried-in items will be searched by security personnel prior to entering the venues. Prohibited items must be returned to the owner’s vehicle or discarded. Items left at the entrance will be discarded. Any unlawful items are subject to confiscation, and the person in possession of such items is subject to arrest. Security officers will search all bags before attendees will be permitted to enter. Those with prohibited items will be asked to return items to their car.

  • Accessibility Services

    Services are available to those attending graduation ceremonies who may require specific accommodations based on accessibility needs. Special entrances are provided at Gates 1, 1A, 6A and 7 for those guests with special needs and disabilities. Handicap Parking is available in the south corner of the Lorton Village Parking Lot, west of the stadium. These spaces are reserved strictly for those vehicles displaying a valid Handicap Parking Permit. Handicap seating is available on the west side of the stadium in Sections 114-117, 109, 110, Section 113 on the south side, and Sections 105-108 on the east side of the stadium.

  • Accommodations for Guests Who are Deaf or Hard of Hearing

    Sign language interpreting services for guests who are deaf or hard of hearing will be available.

  • Inclement Weather Plan

    In case of inclement weather, we will move the ceremony indoors to the Donald W. Reynolds Center, where ceremonies would be livestreamed and only graduates could attend. Due to COVID-19 safety precautions, we would not be able to accommodate guests of graduates if we move indoors.


    Due to the potential for extreme May heat, we are taking measures to keep guests and graduates safe. We encourage guests in vulnerable populations to view the ceremony via livestream. Water will be provided to graduates and will be available for purchase for guests.

  • Will guests have to wear masks?

    Yes, guests will be required to wear a mask for the duration of the ceremony.  Appropriate cloth or surgical-style masks that cover the nose and mouth completely will be required for all guests (age 2 and older, as recommended by the CDC) in all graduation venues. Masks will be distributed to those who do not bring their own. Graduates may temporarily remove their mask as their name is announced.

  • Will the ceremonies be livestreamed?

    Yes, all graduation ceremonies will be livestreamed. Links can be found closer to the event on this webpage.

  • Is registration required for student participants?

    Yes, registration is required for graduation candidates. Watch your email for registration information.

  • Is registration required for guests of graduates?

    Yes. Once registration for graduates has closed, we will determine how many tickets each graduate will receive. Our goal is to allow graduates to bring up to 4 guests in order to adhere to all safety guidelines.

  • Can I bring a bag or diaper bag into the stadium?

    Yes, please remember it must be a clear bag. More information is available here.

  • Will graduates be seated to maintain physical distancing?

    Yes, graduates will be seated in physically distanced seats.

  • Will guests be seated to maintain physical distancing?

    Yes, guests will be separated from other guests by six feet.
