Information for Graduates

In order to graduate, students must have completed a degree application card with their respective college.

Undergraduate Students

Application for a degree should be filed in their respective advising office when a student enrolls for the final semester of course work. All incompletes must be removed from the student’s record before graduation will be posted to your transcript or the diploma issued.

Graduate Students

Application for a degree should be filed in the Graduate School Office in Lorton Hall when a student enrolls for the final semester of course work. All incompletes must be removed from the student’s record.

Thesis and dissertations are due into the library on April 15 (for spring) and Dec. 1 (for fall).

  • Obligations and Deadlines

    Students should check their student account for all financial obligations that may still remain prior to commencement and make arrangements with the Bursar’s Office and the library to clear them.

  • Senior Salute

    Senior Salute

    Monday and Tuesday, March 9 and 10, 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., Reynolds Center

    Rather than having to visit individual offices, seniors can meet with representatives from the Business Office, Registrar, Financial Aid, and Graduate School in one location. Alumni Relations, Students Affairs, Career Services and International Student Services will also be present.

    Students will be able to order class rings, announcements, and photos with vendors at the event. There is no charge for caps and gowns for undergraduate and masters graduates. PhD graduates must rent their regalia. PhD students with questions about regalia should contact the Graduate School.

  • On the big day

    Processional

    Saturday, May 9, at 9:15 a.m., Reynolds Center Practice Gym
    Graduates are to report to to the practice gym and go to the registration table for their college to obtain their official name card. (Please, no children, family or friends allowed in line-up/processional.)

    This card will contain your name and any applicable honors designations to be read by the announcer. The name card will carry your name as requested for your diploma.

    The announcer will read only the information printed on this card. Alterations and additions will be omitted. If the information on your card is incorrect, report to the table staffed by representatives of the Registrar’s Office. Graduates will line up by college.

    Commencement Ceremonies

    Saturday, May 9, at 9:45 a.m., Reynolds Center
    The processional begins promptly at 9:45 a.m.; the ceremony will last approximately two and a half hours. Graduates may not leave the commencement area until the completion of the ceremony and recessional.

    Graduates will receive a diploma cover only during commencement exercises. Diplomas will be mailed to each graduate at a later date.

    College of Law Hooding Ceremony

    Friday, May 8, 5:00 p.m., Reynolds Center
    Line-up begins at 4:15 p.m. Graduating law students, families and friends are invited to attend a reception at the College of Law immediately following the ceremony.
