Russel Lemmons, Ph.D.

Lubell Visiting Research Scholar in Judaic Studies


Russel Lemmons, Ph.D., is a specialist on modern Germany and the Holocaust who teaches courses in the history and religion departments. He has published widely on the Third Reich, the Holocaust, and the history of antisemitism. Twice a Fulbright Research Scholar, he is writing a biography of Rupert Mayer, a German Jesuit priest who opposed National Socialism in Munich during the 1920s and 1930s. The first prominent Bavarian Catholic publicly to oppose Hitler’s political movement, he ended up in Sachsenhausen Concentration Camp. During his year as Lubell Scholar, Lemmons is editing a primary source collection concerning the Holocaust in Hungary.
