As you all likely know, The University of Tulsa has been in discussion with several potential candidates for the position of interim athletic director since our current AD Derrick Gragg announced in August he was leaving TU for a position as senior vice president for inclusion, education and community engagement at the NCAA.
I’m pleased to inform you that Rick Dickson (BS ’77) has accepted the interim position. A Tulsa native, Rick was a Golden Hurricane student-athlete before leading TU’s athletics program for five years in the early 1990s. He is expected to join us virtually on Monday and in person Tuesday. Later today, our Strategic Marketing & Communications and Athletics Communications offices will publicly announce the hiring and issue a news release.
Rick’s prolific career includes time as TU athletic director from 1990 to 1994 before moving on to lead athletic programs at Washington State University (1994-2000) and Tulane University (2000-2015). Programs under his leadership saw dozens of conference championships and scores well above the national average in the NCAA’s Academic Performance Rates.
Under Rick’s tenure in the early 1990s, Tulsa’s football program landed a berth in the Freedom Bowl in 1991 and the men’s basketball program saw NCAA Tournament success under coach Tubby Smith, who Rick hired. Before leaving Tulsa for Washington State in 1994, he helped the university secure membership in the Western Athletic Conference.
Please join me in welcoming Rick and his wife, Brenda (BS ’79), back to TU and Tulsa.
