Position Summary

The Director of Campus Recreation reports to the Executive Director of Health and Wellness.  This position will lead the university’s Office of Campus Recreation in the development of programs, services, facility management and the establishment of sound operational functions, risk management practices, and student wellness in concert with broader student success initiatives both active and in development.  The position is responsible for the overall vision, strategic planning, ongoing assessment and operation of Campus Recreation for the Office of Student Services to include the daily management of the Collins Fitness Center.  This position will lead a comprehensive, student-centered program designed to meet the needs of a diverse campus community. The Director’s portfolio includes oversight of a 67,192-square foot recreation facility and Intramural field; a team of two full time professional staff, and over 75 student employees; and the following program areas: fitness, informal recreation, intramural sports, and special events. The Director collaborates with campus partners to enhance the student experience and support student success by fostering the delivery of programs and services that meet the holistic need of an active community. Specific duties include developing intramural activities, fitness programs, personal training, and collaborating with the student success center, counseling and psychological services center, health services, and human resources for wellness programming.  In addition to the development, the Director will develop ongoing assessments and evaluations of program developments to guide future programming decisions and resource allocation.  The Director is responsible for the fiscal functions of the Office of Campus Recreation, to include long-term forecasting for equipment updates, maintenance, and expansion to meet the recreation and wellness needs of the TU campus.

Characteristic Duties

  • Supervises the development, implementation and evaluation of all programs, policies, procedures, and operations
  • Collects, analyzes and reports on data relevant to facility and program use, student/staff feedback and department and campus wellness goals
  • Forecasts, measures and adjusts operational strategy in consideration of trends, facility and program usage
  • Directs ongoing review and development of risk management plans, emergency response plans, operational manual and rules for fitness center usage based on industry standards
  • Solicits student, faculty and staff feedback for continuous improvement to positively impact customer satisfaction, fitness and wellness goals
  • Reviews and monitors facility schedule to optimize usage for all constituents across campus
  • Develops the strategic plan for Campus Recreation and leads implementation of short-term and long-term plans
  • Manages the annual operating budget to include planning for ongoing maintenance, equipment replacement, and long-term development of programs and resources
  • Develops campus wellness programming initiatives in partnership with student success team, counseling and psychological services and human resources
  • Coordinates with university community to utilize center for revenue generation and facility schedule optimization
  • Handles supervisory responsibilities in accordance with NIRSA standards and applicable laws to include recruitment, training and evaluating staff and program development
  • Supervises three administrative staff members a graduate assistant and student workers
  • Reviews and approves all purchasing and departmental expenses
  • Manages contractual obligations associated with delivery of recreation management and services
  • Performs other duties as assigned/needed

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in Recreation, Sports Administration, Kinesiology, Physical Education, Higher Education or related degree; a minimum of five years of progressive leadership and administrative experience, preferably at the collegiate/university level, to include the development, implementation, administration, and evaluations of programs and services with a commitment to student development and engagement; experience with budget development/management, and fiscal reporting; knowledge and experience in recreational facility operations and management; demonstrated personnel management experience with development of professional and student staff; demonstrated commitment to diversity, inclusion, and quality customer service; strong interpersonal, communication, and organizational skills; membership with the National Intramural Recreational Sports Association (NIRSA); strong computer and social media skills and proven experience with data collection, assessment and continuous improvement for campus recreation and facilities management.

Preferred Qualifications

Master’s degree in Recreation, Sports Administration, Kinesiology, Physical Education, Higher Education or related degree; Registered Collegiate Recreational Sports Professional (RCRSP); Seven or more years of progressively responsible experience with recreation services, preferably at the collegiate/university level, to include the development, implementation, administration, and assessment of programs and services with a commitment to student development and engagement; five years of supervisory experience and department leadership; financial oversight of a departmental or significant budget of six figures or higher; and certification and/or education in exercise science, kinesiology, nutrition and personal training.
