Although we know it as Skelly Field at H.A. Chapman Stadium today, when TU’s stadium first opened on Oct. 4, 1930, it was just called Skelly Field. That day, in front of an audience of 13,000 spectators, TU’s Golden Hurricane football team beat their opponent 26-6. Who lost at Skelly Field on opening day?

The Arkansas Razorbacks.

On the opening kickoff, Arkansas fumbled, and Johnny Potts recovered for Tulsa. On the first play from scrimmage, Billy Boehm scored the first touchdown in the north end zone of the stadium. Later, Chet Benefiel scored the first touchdown in the south end zone. Tulsa went on to win with a final score of 26-6.

The 1931 University of Tulsa yearbook boasts, in part, about Skelly Field's "great lights" used in night games, a perfectly drained field and track, and offices, equipment rooms and locker rooms that are steam heated and ventilated. One of the "finest features" of the new stadium is the electronic scoreboard and the public address system which make "any words of the announcer immediately heard at the most remote corners of the field."

This building’s footprint has changed dramatically during the past ten decades, but one thing has remained the same: Nearly every student who has called TU home has spent countless hours here learning, writing, daydreaming or (quietly) flirting. Can you guess where this is? Check out the photo gallery below to find out if you’re right!

The first building erected on the Tulsa campus (back when we were called Henry Kendall College) was The Administration Building, also known as Kendall Hall. Originally opened in 1908, the first Kendall Hall was razed in 1972, and the cupola and bell were relocated. A new Kendall Hall was built in 1975 where the original stood, and is still in use today as the home of KWGS and TUTV. Check out the photo gallery below to see Kendall Hall through the years.
