The transition to college can be difficult for a lot of people. I was very much one of them. My decision to come to TU was not an easy one. A majority of my high school friends decided to attend the nearest state schools around my area, while I wanted to do something different. I knew that my academic success may be affected by the size of a larger state school. So, TU became a very appealing option for me.
The smaller class size meant that I could interact and focus more on my academics instead of just being a number in a classroom. I made my decision and was excited about my future. When I arrived on campus, I found it hard to connect with people. I made a couple of friends, but we thought that we didn’t fit in with the rest of the crowd. It was a weird and foreign feeling for me and my friends, but I decided to stay positive and give it some time.
A couple of weeks went by, and I joined my fraternity. It took some adjusting, but I found myself get closer with the guys associated. However, that wasn’t really enough for me. I needed to make friends and connections with those outside of my organization. So, I began just introducing myself to my peers in the classroom. I know it sounds a little corny, but I found that just about everyone I introduced myself to was open and friendly. Slowly but surely, I gained more confidence and found little ways to make more friends. So if you feel like you don’t fit in the crowd, do not worry. Get involved in something on campus, and try to introduce yourself in a positive way.
