Frederic Dorwart named TU Board of Trustees chair

Frederic Dorwart, TU Board of Trustees chairThe University of Tulsa announced that Frederic Dorwart, manager of Frederic Dorwart, Lawyers PLLC, is the new chair of TU’s Board of Trustees.

Dorwart joined the Board of Trustees in 2010. His role as chair will take effect on July 1. He succeeds TU alumnus L. Duane Wilson, who joined the board in 1990 and has served as chair since July 1, 2012. TU’s Board of Trustees serves a vital role by providing leadership and guidance for the university and members represent a wide range of personal and professional backgrounds.

“TU has a tremendous opportunity to set the standard in educating the next generation of leaders,” said President Gerard Clancy. “Fred’s community leadership experience and institutional knowledge will prove invaluable to trustees and to university leadership as we implement a five-year strategic plan that reaffirms our commitment to our students and community.”

Dorwart currently serves as president and trustee of the George Kaiser Family Foundation. In 1998, he participated in the organization of the George Kaiser Family Foundation and the Tulsa Community Foundation.

“With new executive leadership in place at TU and a clear vision guiding our path forward, I am pleased to assume the role of chair at this time,” said Dorwart. “The entire board extends its sincere appreciation to Duane Wilson, whose tenure provided direction for the university’s near future.”

Since 1966, Dorwart has been active in both business and law, and over the span of his career has practiced litigation and transactional law, securities and banking. Today, he focuses his efforts structuring commercial transactions, advising clients on the legal aspects of business matters and coordinating teams of attorneys handling complex litigation as manager of Frederic Dorwart, Lawyers PLLC. Before forming Frederic Dorwart, Lawyers in 1994, he was the managing partner of Holliman, Langholz, Runnels & Dorwart.

In 2014, Dorwart developed the structure and organization for the construction and operation of Tulsa’s Gathering Place and its gift by the George Kaiser Family Foundation to the River Parks Authority.

Dorwart is the honoree of the TU Frederic Dorwart Endowed Professorship in Law, and an inductee of the TU College of Law Hall of Fame, the Collins College of Business Hall of Fame and the Tulsa Hall of Fame.

Dorwart was awarded a B.S. in Engineering with Distinction in 1959 from the U.S. Naval Academy and an L.L.B., Cum Laude, from Harvard Law School in 1966. Before law school, Dorwart served as chief engines officer aboard the U.S.S. Newport News, as chief operations officer of the U.S.S. Turner and as Instructor in naval tactics at the U.S. Navy Officer Candidate School.
