Every month, Friends of Finance hosts an Executive Speaker Series luncheon, during which students and faculty members from within the Collins College of Business are honored for their accomplishments and success. This October, senior Silas Hughes and sophomore Jazyn Sanchez were recognized for their academic achievements and impressive involvement on and off campus.
Originally from Omaha, Nebraska, Hughes came to The University of Tulsa to compete in track & field and study petroleum engineering before discovering he had a passion for finance. He is now completing a bachelor’s degree in finance with a minor in business analytics. His campus involvement includes serving as vice president of starTUp, an analyst for the Hurricane Venture Fund and a former student executive officer for the Student Investment Fund. He is also active in Residence Life, the JOLT Creativity Club, the Student Finance Association, and Beta Alpha Phi.
Hughes’ accolades include membership in Phi Eta Sigma Honor Society, the President’s Honor Roll, and passing the Securities Industry Essentials Exam with plans to complete the Series 7. Outside of academics, he is an avid electric guitarist, influenced by legends like Stevie Ray Vaughan and Jimi Hendrix, and enjoys surfing, aspiring to complete a full Iron Man race.
Sanchez is a finance and economics major from Tulsa and is pursuing a minor in Spanish. She currently serves as an executive board member for the Latin American Student Association and the financial wellness liaison for the Student Finance Association. Her commitment to excellence has earned her a place on the President’s Honor Roll and recognition as a Hispanic Scholarship Fund Scholar.
Beyond her academic and campus roles, Sanchez is a dedicated volunteer mentor for the Entrepreneurship Club at San Miguel Middle School, where she teaches financial literacy to low-income middle schoolers in Tulsa. She also works as a part-time cashier at New York Bagel Café and in her free time enjoys painting outdoors and listening to music while riding her electric skateboard.
