From the Dean’s Desk: ECS, May 2025

Andreas A. Polycarpou

As another academic year ends, I’m proud to reflect on the momentum we’ve built across the College of Engineering & Computer Science at The University of Tulsa. From groundbreaking research to industry collaboration and student-led innovation, our community continues to demonstrate a commitment to advancing engineering and computer science education at every level.

This spring, we had the distinct honor of hosting a member-led National Academy of Engineering event. The two-day event convened thought leaders from academia and industry to explore “Carbon Capture, Sequestration, and the Future of Energy.” The event not only amplified UTulsa’s leadership in energy innovation but also reinforced the university’s role as a catalyst for solutions. I extend my deep thanks to James Brill, NAE member and chair of the event, for his leadership.

Celebrating our community’s contributions remains one of our greatest privileges. On May 1, 2025, we welcomed three remarkable alumni into our Hall of Fame: Christina Bishop Jackson, Mark Hatfield, and Tom Jorden. Each of these engineers exemplifies professional excellence and a lasting commitment to UTulsa. The following day, the Make A Difference Engineering (MADE) Showcase highlighted the creative spirit of our students, as they unveiled bioengineering solutions designed alongside and for members of our community.

We’re also proud of our faculty’s continuing impact on national research priorities. Brett McKinney, Warren Foundation Chair in Bioinformatics, is leading a NASA-funded project that blends machine learning and biosignature detection to differentiate biological from abiotic samples – a testament to the power of cross-disciplinary collaboration, pulling from the worlds of machine learning, biochemistry and geochemistry.

At our 56th Honors and Awards Ceremony, we recognized the achievements of our high-achieving students. These honors speak to the caliber of both our students and educators and their pursuit of academic and professional excellence.

As we look to the future, we remain energized by the opportunities ahead. Whether through our continued emphasis on student-centered research, our leadership in energy expansion research, or our growing global partnerships, UTulsa is positioned to help shape the next generation of engineers and computer scientists.

Thank you for your continued support and collaboration. I look forward to the innovations and partnerships that lie ahead.

Regards,
