Dear colleagues,

As we move towards the end of the fall semester, I am pleased to share several significant developments within the College of Engineering & Computer Science that show our commitment to advancing research, innovation and academic excellence.
This month, the Hulings Distinguished Lecture Series featured Ali Erdemir, Ph.D., NAE, a distinguished professor of mechanical engineering and Halliburton Chair in Engineering Professor at Texas A&M University. His presentation explored cutting-edge approaches in advanced materials, highlighting pathways toward improved energy efficiency and sustainability in electric vehicles. These discussions reinforce the importance of interdisciplinary collaboration in the industry and in academic spaces.
Our faculty continue to secure competitive funding and produce impactful research. Mahdi Khodayar, Ph.D., was awarded a U.S. National Science Foundation grant to develop artificial intelligence models for solar power integration. This work aims to optimize distributed energy resources and enable greater participation of energy “prosumers,” contributing to a more resilient and sustainable power grid. In the area of applied research, our paraffin deposition project housed at our one-of-a-kind North Campus facility received national recognition for its industry impact. This project addresses critical flow assurance challenges in oil and gas pipelines, demonstrating how fundamental research can translate into practical solutions for energy infrastructure.
Additionally, the university has announced that the Department of Physics & Engineering Physics will return to the College of Engineering & Computer Science. This strategic move strengthens our research ecosystem, fostering deeper integration between physical sciences and engineering disciplines and expanding opportunities for collaborative scholarship.
These achievements reflect the dedication of our faculty and staff to advancing knowledge and preparing the next generation of engineers and scientists. Thank you for your continued contributions to our shared mission.
Warm regards,
Andreas A. Polycarpou
