TU celebrates by lending a paw to less fortunate pets at Tulsa Animal Welfare

The University of Tulsa’s much-loved canine ambassador, Goldie, turned 1 year old on Friday, March 21, 2014. To mark the occasion, TU is kicking off a 10-day donation drive for the Tulsa Animal Welfare shelter and its furry friends.

Goldie serves as a connection between the university and the community. In addition to delighting students and alumni at athletic events and scholarly activities, she is trained as a therapy dog to visit nursing homes, libraries and hospitals. More recently, Goldie and her TU family have taken an active role in promoting responsible pet ownership and the adoption of homeless animals in our community.

“Tulsa has given Goldie such a warm reception during her first year on campus, and we wanted to pay forward the kindness she has received,” said Kayla Acebo, TU’s vice president of institutional advancement. “What better way to celebrate than to help our four-legged friends at Tulsa Animal Welfare?”

The university will begin accepting donations immediately in Collins Hall, 2905 E. 8th St., on the TU campus between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. Monday through Friday. Other collection sites may be added via social media (@TulsaGoldie on Twitter and Instagram) through March 31 when all of the gifts will be delivered to the shelter.

Tulsa Animal Welfare is in need of many items, and TU is prepared to accept the following:

  • Soft dog treats
  • Rawhide treats/chips
  • KONG toys (all sizes)
  • Sturdy new dog collars (all sizes)
  • Soft cat treats
  • Cat toys
  • Gift cards to Target or Walmart

Treats should be in unopened packages and toys should be unused. If you are interested in donating monetary gifts or large items, such as blankets and towels, please contact the shelter at 918-596-8000.
