Because of the booming computer gaming industry and a surge in expo attendance the past two years, The University of Tulsa Tandy School of Computer Science has moved its third annual Heartland Gaming Expo on April 10-12, 2015, off campus to Tulsa’s Cox Business Center, 100 Civic Center.
This year’s expanded program features a game showcase, gallery show and 24-hour code jam for Oklahoma middle school, high school and college students along with a Microsoft-sponsored gaming tournament open to the general public. The event is sponsored by TU and CymSTAR.
“What began as a small competition in the university’s student union has grown to a public weekend expo in downtown Tulsa,” said Roger Mailler, TU computer science professor and the event’s founding organizer. “We received a lot of interest in expanding the expo’s collegiate audience, so we’re excited to reach a new group of gamers.”
Other expo attractions include tutorials, speakers, vendor exhibits, a free-play arcade zone, and an assortment of activities hosted by Tokyo in Tulsa.
“This event will be one of the state’s largest platforms for student competitors, gaming enthusiasts, organizations and companies to network and promote the gaming industry,” Mailler said.
Heartland Gaming Expo will host informative sessions from legendary game creator Eric “Wingman” Peterson, Oscar-winning game composer Chance Thomas, Tulsa’s local superstar Matt Harmon of Bonozo Apps, “7 Days to Die” designer and producer Richard Huenink, and Planetside 2 and Dota 2 artist Jordan Newman.
“These gaming experts are the inspiration for a new wave of gaming designers we will welcome this fall in TU’s new computer simulation and gaming degree program,” Mailler said. “I’ve received an overwhelming response from potential students who are interested in pursuing this type of major.”
Early bird prices for single tickets and two-day passes are available through March 30. For complete information, please visit www.heartlandgamingexpo.com.
