The University of Tulsa’s Henneke Center for Academic Fulfilment has selected the fellows for the inaugural Second Book Institute (SBI). They are:
- Jeffrey Drouin, The University of Tulsa
- Jason Farr, Marquette University
- Cecilia Feilla, Marymount Manhattan College
- Lesley Feracho, The University of Georgia
- S. Fitzgerald, Arizona State University
- Ann Folino White, Michigan State University
- Rei Magosaki, Chapman University
- Diana Solomon, Simon Fraser University
“I am delighted to launch this initiative and grateful to TU President Brad Carson for supporting this idea,” said Laura Stevens, Chapman Professor of English and SBI co-director. “I have high hopes that the institute will propel eight talented, dedicated scholars toward completion of their second books, but also that it will catalyze a nationwide discussion about the importance of prioritizing the mid-career development of faculty as intellectuals and authors.”
The SBI fellows will gather on TU’s campus in June 2023 for the week-long institute. Writing coach and Professor Emerita Joli Jensen will conduct workshops designed to accelerate completion of their second scholarly monographs, and Greg Britton, editorial director of Hopkins Press, will meet individually and collectively with the fellows to discuss their book projects.
“The Henneke Center for Academic Fulfillment is excited about the opportunity to build a community of scholars and establish a supportive network for faculty members from diverse universities through the Second Book Institute,” said Danielle Macdonald, Henneke Center director and SBI co-director.
Stalling at the associate professor stage is a widely recognized problem in higher education, as mid-career faculty contend with ever-growing demands for service and mentoring while managing a range of caretaking obligations. These obstacles are especially high for fields in which books constitute the primary measure of scholarly accomplishment and stand as the main requirement for professorial promotion.
