Inside a nuclear power plant: UTulsa students get rare look at alternative energy

Students and faculty toured Cooper Nuclear Station to learn about plant operations, safety protocols and the role of nuclear power in the energy grid.

This spring, University of Tulsa students toured Cooper Nuclear Station in Nemaha County, Nebraska, gaining direct access to one of the region’s largest sources of carbon-free energy.

The visit, supported by the energy business and petroleum engineering programs, provided a comprehensive overview of plant operations, safety protocols and the role of nuclear power in maintaining a reliable energy grid. Participants toured key areas of the facility, including the radiologically controlled area, where they observed the precision and procedures required in daily operations.

Students and faculty also engaged directly with plant professionals, discussing control room operations, regulatory compliance, workforce demands and industry trends. The experience was arranged by Andrew J.L. Askins, director of operations and a UTulsa master’s of energy business graduate, and hosted by Stephanie Farmer, nuclear communications specialist. Assistant Professor of Practice of Petroleum Engineering Mike Stafford and Genave King Rogers Endowed Associate Professor of Energy Law and Commerce Buford Pollett supported coordination of the trip.

Pollett said the visit connected academic concepts with industry practice.

“The experience highlighted the importance of operational excellence, safety culture and technological innovation in nuclear energy,” he said.

The visit also emphasized the broader role of nuclear power in the current energy landscape, including its contribution to carbon-free electricity generation and grid reliability. Discussions with plant staff provided insight into the scale of operations and the long-term planning required to support energy demand.

“Visiting Cooper Nuclear Station changed the way I see energy completely,” said biology junior Julia Peters of Skiatook. “Seeing it operate up close opened my eyes to how much clean energy we could realistically be generating.”

Michael Cintron of Oklahoma City said the experience reinforced the complexity of plant operations and its job potential.

“It was incredible to see all the different things that go into a nuclear power plant and to see firsthand how clean the energy is,” said Cintron, who completed his bachelor’s degree in energy management in May. “This visit really showed me another great path for my career.”
