Being from Minnesota and never having been to Oklahoma before visiting The University of Tulsa, I had this preconceived notion that all of the students would be from either Oklahoma or a bordering state. And although there are many from Oklahoma, Arkansas, Texas and Missouri there are also students from not only all over the country, but all over the world. I am on the Women’s Rowing team at Tulsa and on our team alone has girls from eight different countries.
Athletics as a whole does an amazing job of recruiting internationally and the University also brings in people with extensive different backgrounds. I think that it is so interesting that it is while living in Tulsa, Oklahoma that I have been exposed to the most cultural differentiation and diversity.
I love that I am always learning from my team and classmates about things I wouldn’t learn in a classroom. I can’t count the amount of times in class professors have been teaching a subject involving something international and instead of inferring what they believe to be true, they ask students that are from those countries. This has allowed not only the students in that class to learn more, but even the professors.
This university has brought me some of my best friends and it’s so interesting that I can say that each and every one of them is from a different part of the country and world. I know that if I am ever traveling anywhere within the United States or even Europe, I will have a place to stay or someone to visit.
