Making Freshmen Year Easier

Starting college is scary, you’re at the bottom of the food chain once again, “fresh meat.” I wasn’t the most involved in high school, I played varsity soccer and helped create the yearbook, but that was it. I never went to any football games, I stayed in my room and either did homework or watched Netflix. Taking these things into consideration I was dead set on not attending orientation, it wasn’t my thing to come out of my shell. I decided last minute to attend at least the first day and if I didn’t want to continue with it then I wouldn’t, but I make the deal to go one day and give it a try. I was scared going to our first meeting together, and the first day of school hadn’t even started yet. Walking into it, everyone was so welcoming, something I had never expected. I made friends immediately and Carlos, our peer mentor, was super easy to talk to. Carlos made everything fun, if there was an activity the group didn’t want to do, we would do something else. He was also super informative, if he didn’t have an answer to one of our questions, he would do everything in his power to get it. Orientation was one of the best experiences, it gave me a head start on making friends and gave me a peer mentor that has tremendously helped with all of my “dumb freshman questions.” I highly recommend all incoming students give orientation a chance, even if it’s one day, do it and you’ll at least be able to say you tried.
