Precautions for Flu, Coronavirus — January 23, 2020

TU community,

We are happy to be back on campus after the winter break. Unfortunately, the new year has brought an uptick in the number of cases of influenza. Our health professionals also are monitoring the emerging spread of a new strain of coronavirus.

As a preventive measure, we ask that you seek medical attention if you exhibit signs of fever, cough, shortness of breath, body/muscle aches, headache, chills or fatigue.

Students may call the Alexander Health Center at 918-631-2241 to schedule an appointment on weekdays between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. (The center is closed from 12 to 1 p.m. for lunch.)

Faculty and staff should call their primary care provider or the Hurricane Health Clinic at 918-631-2974 to schedule an appointment on weekdays between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. (The clinic is closed from 12 to 1 p.m. for lunch.)

After hours or on weekends, please visit an urgent care center or, if necessary, a hospital emergency room for further evaluation and treatment.

Please let your health care provider know if you traveled outside of the United States within 14 days prior to symptom onset.

Effective Jan. 23, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has issued a Watch Level 3 Alert (Practice Enhanced Precautions) for an ongoing outbreak of pneumonia first identified in Wuhan, China, caused by a new coronavirus. The full details of the statement are available on the CDC website.

To prevent the spread of illness:

  • If you are sick, cover your mouth and nose with a tissue when you cough or sneeze. You can also cough into your elbow. Throw tissues in the trash and wash your hands after touching used tissues.
  • Wash your hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds, especially after coughing or sneezing. Alcohol-based hand sanitizers also work to kill viruses.
  • Do not get too close (kissing, hugging) to people who are sick.
  • Do not share towels or handkerchiefs with anyone who is sick. Clean commonly handled things like door handles, remote controls, toys and phones with a disinfectant.
  • Avoid densely crowded places.
  • If you have not yet received a flu vaccine, please call the Alexander Health Center or Hurricane Health Clinic to schedule an immunization.

If you have further questions or concerns about coronavirus, contact us at the numbers listed above or visit the CDC website.

Thank you, and stay well!
