Annaliese Stump (B.S.B.A. ’25) of Cypress, Texas, just finished her bachelor’s degree in a high-demand field – energy management – with a minor in finance and a certificate of risk management. In August 2024, she was offered a job as a production landman in the Permian Basin of West Texas for Coterra Energy immediately following commencement.
Her new job as landman involves protecting the company’s leasehold and ensuring their wells continue producing. So far, Stump has found that the experience has given her a deeper understanding of land operations and how assets are managed behind the scenes. This entails extensive leasehold research, reviewing contracts and agreements, communicating with the State of New Mexico and collaborating with production and engineering teams.
Stump took the first step and introduced herself to Coterra at the CaneCareers job fair when she was a junior. Her professionalism and passion for the industry made her stand out as a candidate. She had previous experience interning with Coterra, as well as working with a renewables company in power marketing and interning at a business development/public relations firm, which refined her communication skills.
“When I first heard about the landman role, I thought it wasn’t for me,” she said. “But I decided to explore it anyway so I could say I had given it a fair chance. That decision changed everything.”
By taking that leap, Stump was able to discover how the job uniquely combined so many of her interests. “My advice is: If a company you admire offers you the chance to try something new, take it. You may just find your career and your calling in the process,” she said.
She was president of the University Ambassadors, the Tulsa Energy Management Student Association, and the Two-Step Club all during her senior year. Additionally, Stump completed multiple study abroad courses in Scotland and Norway while attending UTulsa, experiences that shaped her as a person and made it clear to her that the energy industry was where she was supposed to be.
She specifically thanked faculty members Buford Pollett (energy law), Mike Stafford (petroleum engineering) and Tally Ferguson (finance), as well as Sharp Chaplain Jeff Francis, for their support throughout her academic journey.
