The University of Tulsa College of Law earns the second highest ranking in the U.S. in preLaw Magazine’s Employment Honor Roll 2018. The ranking reflects a comparison between the school’s actual employment rate of the 2017 class with the rate predicted by LSATs or GPAs. Only eight colleges in the U.S. rated 10 percentage points higher than expected including TU Law.
The ranking, which was announced in the “Back to School” issue of preLaw, points out that TU Law has an “employment rate of 91 percent, its best ever.” The ranking used a weighted employment rate from the 2017 class that gave more weight to full-time, bar passage-required jobs, and less weight to part-time and nonlegal jobs.
TU Law Dean Lyn Entzeroth, who was featured in the article, said, “A strong academic core, vigorous practical training and a committed faculty are all necessary, but so is professional development. On top of it, we make career services a focus, and it starts at orientation.”
Students participate in an orientation — Foundations of Legal Studies — before taking a single class. They visit the federal courthouse and meet judges, as well as attend social events where they meet deans and faculty.
In the first semester, first-year students are required to take the Dean’s Seminar, which is led by Dean Entzeroth and Director of Professional Development Christy Caves. The seminar, which is an introduction to the legal world, concludes with a one-on-one meeting to help students begin mapping out their career plans.
By Thanksgiving of the first year, each student is required to write a résumé that is reviewed by the college’s Professional Development staff. Students also are expected to hold informational interviews with legal professionals that provide them with the opportunity to learn interviewing skills without the pressure of having a job on the line.
TU Law’s mentoring program teams 2L and 3L students with legal professionals. “The Professional Development Office makes it a goal to work with students throughout their law school years,” said Entzeroth.
