My freshman year of college we were matched up against Wichita State in basketball. This is a conference matchup, so it is a very big game. The student section was overflowing with students wearing foam fingers. Elijah Joiner, our point guard at the time, had his dad coming to watch him play a game for the first game ever.
He started out on a hot streak draining every three that he shot. It stayed a very competitive game through the first half and the student section was lively. We heckled the Wichita State players from right next to their bench. At the end of the half, 3 of my friends and I were picked to go on to the basketball court and do a free throw shooting contest.
The second half picked right up as it left off. The teams were just going back and forth. As the game approached the final minutes, we surpassed the 60 point threshold that rewarded all of the TU students a “Buy One Get One” deal at Cane’s. Wichita State goes ahead by 2 points with 5 seconds left. Jackson grabs the ball out of the net and throws it in to Joiner who heaves up a half court shot to win the game.
It goes in and everyone storms the court and celebrates with the player. We all put our arms around each other and say the alma mater. It is moments like this where you get to feel the true community of TU.
