TU Orientation: An Experience Like No Other

As do most freshmen coming into a new university, I took part in orientation the week before my freshman year started. Also like most freshmen, I wasn’t sure what to expect as I was starting at a new school, and I knew no one. Because of this uncertainty, I almost decided to skip orientation altogether, since I was a commuter student and wouldn’t spend much time on campus anyways. Who needs to learn about the university and find friends when you’re rarely there? Despite this uncertainty, I decided to attend orientation, in case it ended up being worth it. I’m glad I made this decision, as orientation was one of the best weeks that I’ve had at TU during my time here. It was a multilocation experience, with half taking place on TU’s campus and the other half taking place at Frontier Cove, a summer camp in northeast Oklahoma. Tons of fun experiences included swimming, go carts, group activities, and movies. Victoria Tucker, my orientation leader, was truly amazing. She led ice breaker activities to introduce us to our classmates, led tours of campus, and was willing to answer any questions that we had about college in general. It was easy to see that all the orientation leaders, not just Victoria, took pride in what they were doing and wanted us to do well at TU. These connections to our Orientation Leader were kept with lunches held throughout the fall semester, in which we could discuss our concerns and ask any other questions that we had. Overall, TU offers an orientation that is comparable to no other university. With fun games and activities, a trip, introductions to new people, and connections to mentors, it is easy to see that the university wants new students to adjust to their new environment. Lunches held throughout your first semester maintain relationships built during orientation and ensure that you always have somewhere to go in which you know someone.
