The University of Tulsa does not lack character. One of my favorite things about the campus is all the strange traditions and legends we have. I live in Lottie Jane Mabee Hall, and I always say Hello and Goodbye to her portrait when I see her in the lobby. My dorm looks directly at John Mabee Hall, and this is so Lottie Jane Mabee’s portrait can keep an eye on her husband’s portrait, John Mabee, through the glass doors. Rumor has it if they can’t see each other then something disastrous will happen. The Mabee’s also hold several events together each year. There is the formal and the toilet bowl. The toilet bowl is a competition between the Mabee’s, and they compete in a flag football game. Another rumor is there are tunnels connecting each of the buildings that are no longer in use. You can only ring the bell after you have completed your final exam senior year and if you ring it before you will not graduate. One tradition I am extremely excited about is the homecoming bonfire. There is a flower bed in the middle of the old U that gets lit on fire to kick off the beginning of homecoming. Soon after homecoming week, Fisher South becomes a haunted house. This will be so much fun to attend because Fisher South has the perfect architecture and design to become a haunted house. The library supposedly has ghosts living on the third floor. Each of these things, whether true or not, brings character to the university.
