The federal Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program, which allowed children who entered the United States with undocumented immigrant parents to remain in the country, has come under fire in recent months and now appears headed for a political showdown.
The University of Tulsa seeks to remain above the fray and is committed to supporting all students who desire a college education and a better life for themselves, their families and our world. Many young people protected by DACA share those goals and are willing to work hard to achieve them.
TU President Gerard P. Clancy has joined with hundreds of other university leaders to encourage elected officials to uphold DACA and remain true to the values upon which this nation of nonnatives was founded. TU is a richly diverse campus willing to accept and empower students regardless of immigration status. We implore policymakers to maintain an open dialogue and help our young “dreamers” pave a path to citizenship.
