Updates from the Chair: Cyber Studies

Tyler Moore, Tandy Endowed Chair in Cyber Security and Information Assurance

Dear UTulsa community,

I am proud to share some recent accomplishments of the students and faculty in the School of Cyber Studies, the nation’s first and only dedicated academic department in cyber offering B.S., M.S., and Ph.D. degrees. The school is interdisciplinary by design, with faculty spanning computer science, engineering, business, law, social sciences, and humanities.

Designated by the NSA as a Center of Academic Excellence since 2000, our Cyber Corps program has graduated more than 350 students since 2001, with 70% going to work at NSA or CIA. Today, approximately 40 doctoral students pursue advanced research study on a variety of externally funded projects.

Brock Associate Professor Mauricio Papa leads a $3.75 million effort funded by the U.S. Army Engineering and Research Development Center to investigate gas pipeline security, and Assistant Professor Weiping Pei received a CRII award from NSF to study secure crowdsourcing methods.

Finally, our faculty continues to grow with three recent hires. Assistant Professor Yi Ting Chua is a cyber criminologist who investigates the Internet’s role in criminal offending and deviant behaviors. Research Assistant Professor Andrew Morin brings expertise in security economics and cryptocurrencies, and  Associate Professor of Practice Justin Miller completed a 25-year career in the U.S. Secret Service, during which he led high-profile electronic crime investigations.

We look forward to familiarizing you with more of our distinguished faculty and astounding alumni and students throughout the academic year.

Sincerely,

Tyler Moore
