The University of Tulsa has been recognized by the ALL IN Campus Democracy Challenge with the 2024 Highly Established Action Plan Seal for its strong plan to increase nonpartisan democratic engagement by promoting civic learning, political engagement, and college student voter participation.
“Preparing good students to be good citizens is part of The University of Tulsa’s mission,” said President Brad R. Carson. “Being educated, staying informed, and participating in the democratic process are important responsibilities as U.S. citizens. Universities are well positioned to combat apathy and disengagement among young people in our country, and I am proud we have taken additional steps to energize and enlighten the next generation of leaders.”
The University of Tulsa is honored alongside other prestigious private and public campuses, including Brown University, George Washington University, University of Pittsburgh, Rutgers University, Northeastern University, Washington University in St. Louis, Drake University, University of Washington, Case Western Reserve University, University of Texas at Austin, University of Michigan, University of Kansas, Purdue University, and William & Mary. UTulsa is the only university in Oklahoma to be recognized.
Led by Carson, a former member of Congress and under secretary for the U.S. Department of Defense, UTulsa’s Democratic Engagement Action Plan was developed by a multidisciplinary team. The purpose of the plan is to institutionalize engaged citizenship and increase voter participation among students, with the goal of fostering a campus culture grounded in deliberative democracy and informed civic participation. Since its inception, the plan has seen significant growth and success, driven by collaborative efforts across various campus departments, student organizations, and external partners. Initiatives have expanded to encompass voter registration drives, candidate forums, and community partnerships.
Action plan strength was determined by reviewing campus action plans with the Strengthening American Democracy Action Planning Rubric.
“Involving students in the civic process allows them to recognize their individual power as engaged citizens. In addition to casting a ballot, our students are developing a lifelong commitment to civic participation,” said Melissa Abdo, the university’s director of civic engagement.
