Creative Writing

Learn alongside a diverse student body, find inspiration, develop creativity, and shape your craft.

The Department of English and Creative Writing has a long tradition of excellence in teaching and research, combining academic rigor with a commitment to encouraging and guiding our students. Our faculty specializes in critical exploration of British, American, and Irish literature from the Middle Ages to the present, and you will gain rich training across wide-ranging forms and genres: fiction, poetry, creative nonfiction, and performance-based work.

There are frequent opportunities to learn the craft of writing through creative writing workshops taught by nationally and internationally known novelists or poets. You will cultivate skills that many employers demand, including abilities to analyze complex ideas, work in various creative and collaborative settings, and communicate effectively and professionally.

Classical Studies

Explore the ancient civilizations of Greece and Rome and their medieval and modern legacies, and see the present era in a new light.

One of the only programs of its kind in Oklahoma, this interdisciplinary certificate can be earned in addition to a major or as a standalone degree. It offers the opportunity to study the ancient Greco-Roman world and its legacies through original texts, art, and more. Work closely with experts in various disciplines, including History, Philosophy, and Literature, and deepen your understanding of Classical Antiquity as you thrive in a stimulating environment and develop crucial analytical and critical thinking skills. The program’s flexible curriculum has two options: the civilization track or the civilization and languages track, which offers Greek and Latin. In either track, students can elect courses from multiple disciplines or concentrate on a specific field, like History or Latin.

Anthropology

Shape the future of social sciences by studying cultures, bridging gaps, and acknowledging cross-cultural diversity.

Anthropology is the study of humans, past and present. Our interdisciplinary programs are devised around four traditional areas of anthropology: archaeology, cultural anthropology, biological (physical) anthropology, and linguistics. This allows you to grasp the complexity of cultures across history fully.

Developing your ability to comprehend and analyze theories, human cultures, and social groups will be at the core of your educational and personal development. Our expert faculty will support you on innovative research projects in UTulsa’s state-of-the-art laboratories and across field sites worldwide. You will have access to our world-class collections and archives, including the most extensive lithic raw material collection in the U.S., while learning to apply theory and methods to real-world problems.

African American Studies

Our interdisciplinary African American Studies minor provides valuable insight into the numerous ways Africans and African Americans have shaped the history and culture of the Americas.

UTulsa’s African American Studies minor provides a breadth of courses from a wide variety of disciplines that help students explore the rich history and culture of African-descended peoples. Students can complement any major with classes like African film, African politics, the Civil War and Reconstruction, the economics of Black Wall Street, the sociology of inequality in American society, the history of jazz, and many more.

Advertising

Combine your creativity and communication skills to craft messages with the power to persuade, motivate and inspire action.

Our interdisciplinary curriculum fosters creativity, innovation, entrepreneurship and leadership, ensuring you’ll gain the skills and knowledge needed to thrive in the ever-evolving creative industry. You will join a close-knit, collaborative environment led by our proactive faculty, introducing you to project-based experiences – from devising start-to-finish advertising campaigns to pitching design concepts to real-life clients.

With an emphasis on writing, public speaking and the power of persuasion, our comprehensive advertising program ensures your exceptional communication skills rise to any challenge. Via TU’s student-operated graphic design agency, Third Floor Design and the TUTV Media Lab, you will have numerous opportunities to build your portfolio and bring your ideas to life.

Community & Public Health

Utilize classroom knowledge and clinical experience to become the next generation of healthcare providers.

Our integrative healthcare studies major, health sciences minor, and public health minor are designed to provide you with foundational knowledge and a broader understanding of universal concepts related to health and healthcare. It is recommended for those students from any major who plan to work in any aspect of healthcare and other clinically related topics. In high-tech classrooms and under the guidance of our supportive community of faculty and peers, the coursework required for this academic minor allows you to tailor the 12 required credit hours from a wide-ranging list of courses related to health and healthcare-related disciplines.

Chemistry & Biochemistry

Are you naturally curious and also have a love of numbers and analysis? Immerse yourself in this cutting-edge field that opens the doors to countless careers, both in the lab and out of it.

Our programs in chemistry and biochemistry strongly emphasize hands-on laboratory experience to encourage creativity and innovation. You will receive individual attention from our faculty and thrive in intimate learning environments where lab sessions rarely exceed 30 students.

Whether you are interested in law, medicine, pharmaceuticals or teaching, a chemistry or biochemistry degree prepares you for excellence in many disciplines. We are proud to offer one of the best-equipped programs of its size in the U.S., where you will have access to a wide variety of high-end field equipment equal to the facilities of big state schools.

The Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry offers bachelor of arts, bachelor of science, master of science, and doctor of philosophy degrees in chemistry. Students also can pursue a combined bachelor’s and master’s program to complete both degrees in five years.

Biomedical Engineering

Can you imagine applying technological advances to medicine? Learn to use engineering methods to solve complex medical problems.

Biomedical engineers have designed some of the most important medical devices used today – from pulse-regulating pacemakers to easy-to-use blood glucose monitors. The interdisciplinary structure of this minor allows you to explore a range of diverse courses in biology, computer science, chemistry, chemical engineering, electrical engineering, mathematics, mechanical engineering, and engineering physics. You will have a chance to make your mark by applying fundamental engineering principles to the areas of materials science, electronics, software development, and health equipment.

Biological Science

Working on outdoor sites is integral to teaching and includes visits to ecological field sites such as the Oklahoma Cross Timbers and the Ozark Mountains. Speech-Language Pathology

Combine academic coursework and practical experience to optimize the fundamental human activities of communication and swallowing. 

Our programs prepare you for meaningful careers in communication sciences and disorders. Supported by expert faculty who prioritize individualized learning, you will gain comprehensive training in developing and rehabilitating speech, language, and swallowing skills.

You will follow a sequence of basic science and pre-professional courses during your undergraduate study and participate in a practicum onsite during your senior year. Our master’s program combines academic coursework with in-depth practical experience in UTulsa’s speech and hearing clinic with subsequent practica at various off-campus facilities. UTulsa programs are designed to provide a strong academic and clinical foundation that allows you to expertly evaluate, treat and conduct research into human communication and swallowing disorders.

Nursing

For more than 50 years, our school has committed to teaching the best practices that advance the art and science of nursing. Our pre-licensure program combines a solid educational core that fosters critical thinking with clinical training incorporating the latest technology and protocols.

We offer individualized mentorship and experiential activities to prepare you to pass the nursing licensure exam (NCLEX) and join a thriving community of healthcare providers. Besides the regular, you can opt for a well-rounded online RN to Bachelor of Science in Nursing (RN-BSN) program designed for RNs who want to take the next step in their career and fast-track the path to nursing leadership.

The University of Tulsa offers two routes to obtaining your degree – a five-year accelerated bachelor’s to master’s program and a two-year post-baccalaureate master’s program. We prepare you to expertly prevent, evaluate, diagnose, and rehabilitate injuries and illnesses.

Students in the program will gain comprehensive experience under the direct supervision of our professional faculty and staff, all of whom are BOC and licensed athletic trainers. From national internships to working with highly regarded sports teams, our carefully devised programs combine academic coursework and hands-on practice to prepare you for entry-level positions in one of the fastest-growing careers in the U.S., according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics.

Petroleum Engineering

Petroleum engineering focuses on developing, exploring, drilling, producing, and managing oil and natural gas resources and other minerals.

Our curriculum balances academic excellence in teaching and our longstanding commitment to discovering new concepts and technologies in drilling, production, and reservoir engineering. You will gain a solid foundation in broad areas of study ranging from math, physics, chemistry, and geology to technical engineering skills in blending fluids and solid mechanics.

McDougall School of Petroleum Engineering is internationally recognized as one of the top petroleum engineering schools in the country. Supported by our expert faculty, you will have access to many research opportunities with 21 existing consortia and joint industry projects supported by some of the world’s top energy firms.

Mathematics

The Department of Mathematics offers a bachelor of science, bachelor of arts, and master of science in mathematics and applied mathematics. Many of our math students also double major in another discipline.
