School of Music selects 2023 Parriott Scholarship recipient

Congratulations to incoming harp performance major Jacinta Johnson for receiving the Kathleen C. Parriott Scholarship, which is awarded to one outstanding incoming freshman every four years. The recipient goes through two rounds of auditions and writes an essay about their music background and goals.

Johnson began studying the harp in fall 2018 with TU instructor Lorelei Barton. Johnson progressed rapidly and began performing in the Tahlequah area and with the Tulsa Youth Symphony. She has won several playing achievements such as the Young Artist’s Solo Competition with the Bartlesville Symphony and the Oklahoma Symphony’s Ladies’ Music Club.

Johnson’s career goals are to be a soloist and orchestral harpist in addition to exploring other music pursuits. Along with performing, she would like to become a certified music practitioner (CMP) and to research the music of Hermann Cohen, a piano prodigy of Franz Liszt. To do this, she plans to take advantage of TU’s study abroad program in Toulouse to strengthen her French skills and find some of Cohen’s works adaptable to harp.

Johnson is a very sweet person who is modest and humble but serious about her pursuits.
