Peer Mentors
UTulsa student peer mentors are at the heart of what we do. We carefully select experienced student leaders who demonstrate a deep commitment to helping others succeed. These student leaders then serve as guides and catalysts for new students. They bring with them a wide range of experiences in campus organizations, co-curricular activities, cultural encounters, and academic excellence. Peer mentors are responsible for almost all aspects of New Student Orientation.
Peer mentors also are an integral part of each first-year student’s FYE1001 course. The peer mentors model academic engagement, support instruction throughout the semester, and are available to their students each week in the course – and throughout the first year – to help in any way needed.
A new student first meets their peer mentor over the summer (through email, texts, GroupMe, or Zoom). That same peer mentor hosts their Orientation experience before classes begin, and then is embedded with them each week in their FYE1001 course. Peer mentors stay connected to their students throughout their first year of college to answer questions, connect them with resources, and just be a friend through the challenges of the college transition.
