University School Opportunities

While there are essential content and skills that need to be mastered in school, the signature ingredient of University School is our commitment to transcend the assumed aspects of school in order to transform lives through the gift of a lifelong love for learning.

Inclusion and Belonging

——————————

When differences are met with a curious mind and an eagerness to learn there is immense opportunity for personal and community growth. University School is committed to fostering curious learners who see every sort of diversity as a chance to learn. And since challenge is at the heart of University School’s mission, we value diversity for its ability to produce challenge: varied perspectives and ideas make it necessary to think and work harder to find solutions. We firmly believe in a principle of ‘many minds, one mission’—the ideal that from diverse individual minds can come a common purpose.

USchool Experience

  • Clubs & Activities
  • Physical Education
  • Art Programs
  • Music Programs
  • Social & Emotional Learning
  • Student Leadership
    • Robust co-curricular activities and clubs

University School has a long track record of success in Academic Bowl, Chess, MATHCOUNTS, Robotics, and Speech and Debate. Our non-competitive club options vary each year and semester, but regularly provide opportunities in art, music, drama, and outdoor education. We also partner with UTulsa’s Case Tennis Center to provide an educational tennis program.

    • Athletics and physical education

Our physical education program is designed to promote healthy living habits, teamwork, and fair play, holding to the principle that a sound mind requires a sound body. All students receive physical education through specialty course instruction.

    • Fine art instruction

The art program at University School focuses on broad exposure to media and styles and includes a strong component of art history as students study art through the eras of human civilization. Its goals are to encourage students in the arts by helping them to recognize their own capabilities for expression and to learn that art is not simply about talent, but about hard work, skill, and care. Ultimately it is aimed at fostering creative ability and enjoyment through creative expression.

    • Vocal and instrumental instruction

Music at University School is a combination of vocal and instrumental elementary instruction. Students build the foundations of musical literacy and learn to read music, understand rhythm, and follow conduction. Movement and socialization play a strong role, and instruction is informed by the Orff and Kodaly methods making music accessible and enjoyable for all students. Students have opportunities to perform, including in UTulsa’s incredible Lorton Performing Arts Center.

    • Student growth and development

Students at all grade levels receive dedicated in-class lessons targeting age-appropriate social-emotional learning. Delivered by our school counselor, lessons aim to foster student resilience and development in body, mind, and spirit. The entire University School community is a part of each child’s social and emotional development, as we provide a structured and nurturing atmosphere filled with positive role models who demonstrate daily their care for young people.

    • Learn through leading

University School provides students opportunities to lead, whether that is leading their own learning in the classroom or as a part of one of our co-curricular programs. Many of our clubs and activities provide chances for students to demonstrate different types of leadership, both front-facing and behind-the-scenes. Student-driven service projects and donation drives happen regularly to support both local and global causes. Our University School Ambassadors program for middle-school students is a dedicated leadership development program for students.
