Carter Johansen, a sophomore in The University of Tulsa’s Kendall College of Arts & Sciences and Honors College, has been accepted to participate in the prestigious 2025 Fulbright Summer Institute in the United Kingdom. He is majoring in English literature and pursuing minors in historical trauma and transformation, psychology, and philosophy.
The three- to four-week Fulbright program is for U.S. undergraduate students who have no or very little travel experience outside North America, providing an opportunity for them to explore the culture, heritage, and history of the U.K. while also studying at some of the most exciting universities in Great Britain. Johansen will be at the University of Bristol.
“Being a Fulbright Summer Institute participant means infinitely more to me than simply studying abroad,” Johansen said. “It has reinforced my sense of self-efficacy, encouraged me to continue exploring my passions, and, most of all, it has reminded me to always shoot for the stars.”

There are several U.K. Summer Institutes offered annually, each hosted by a different university and focused on a specific historical, cultural, or subject-related theme. The Fulbright University of Bristol Summer Institute will explore the intersection of arts, activism, and social justice. Students will have the chance to participate in creative, hands-on workshops with artists, entrepreneurs, and activists from the thriving arts and voluntary sectors of Bristol.
“Because it focuses on arts and activism, I knew that participating in this institute would not only be academically enriching, but it would also play an integral role in my personal development,” said Johansen, who also serves as a university ambassador. “I am beyond grateful for this opportunity, as it is expanding my world and, with it, the possibilities for my future.”
