The Outsiders House Museum recently hosted a special three-day event to celebrate the 40th anniversary of the film “Rumble Fish.”
This iconic 1983 film is based on the novel by renowned author S.E. Hinton (BS ’70). Originally published as a short story in the Nimrod International Journal of Prose and Poetry, the story, set in Tulsa, follows the relationship between two brothers, Motorcycle Boy, played by Mickey Rourke, and Rusty James, played by Matt Dillon.
The October exhibition included highlights like Dillon’s screen-worn wardrobe, unpublished behind-the-scenes photos, and international movie posters.
Hinton is an internationally known author, native Tulsan, and English graduate of The University of Tulsa. Her published works include “The Outsiders,” “That Was Then, This Is Now,” and “Rumble Fish.” The film adaptations of her novels helped advance the careers of notable actors, including Tom Cruise, Rob Lowe, Patrick Swayze, and others.
Hinton was recognized as a TU Distinguished Alumna in 1990 for her work and success and extended her generosity to students in the Department of English & Creative Writing through an endowed gift formally recognized as the S.E. Hinton Endowed Scholarship for Creative Writing.
Nimrod is published twice a year. The journal features poetry, short fiction, and creative nonfiction. Since its founding at TU in 1956, Nimrod has published original work from renowned writers Michael Blumenthal, Rita Dove, Stanley Kunitz, and more.
