From the Dean’s Desk: ECS, April 2025

Andreas A. Polycarpou

April is a busy time here at the College of Engineering & Computer Science: Among the college’s events, we are celebrating strides in our faculty and student’s research, new faculty members joining the college, and new course offerings.

This month, we are thrilled to welcome you all to the first member-led National Academy of Engineering (NAE) conference at The University of Tulsa on April 25, 2025. Join us at this gathering of industry experts, academics, and thought leaders as we explore the topic of “Carbon Capture, Sequestration, and the Future of Energy.” For all those interested, you may learn more and register at this link: https://sites.utulsa.edu/naeutulsa/.

We are proud to be home to innovative research. Associate Professor Peter Hawrylak, Ph.D., is pioneering work in cybersecurity and energy that is establishing the university as a leader in digital energy research. As featured in a recent story, UTulsa alumna Carrie Kirk exemplifies our commitment to excellence in her nonprofit leadership and entrepreneurship.

In addition, I would like to welcome Hazem Refai, Ph.D., as the new chair of the Department of Electrical & Computer Engineering. He began work with the department in January and joins us with over 30 years of expertise in teaching and research, making significant advancements in wireless technology and medical device communications.

I am excited to share that the college developed two new minors: one in artificial intelligence and another in aerospace. These additions reflect our commitment to providing students with access to state-of-the-art education. It is advancements like these that continue to define and elevate the ECS college, ensuring we remain at the forefront of innovation and excellence.

Finally, Tuesday, April 8, is TU Giving Day. Our community’s gracious donations help us champion cutting-edge research, enrich campus life, and extend our impact beyond Tulsa. If you would like to support UTulsa, you may find more information on how to give or how to become an ambassador here. I extend my warmest gratitude to all that make our work here possible.

Sincere regards,

Andreas A. Polycarpou
