From the Dean’s Desk: ECS, August 2025

Andreas A. Polycarpou

Dear colleagues,

As we embark on a new academic year, we want to celebrate the remarkable achievements of our faculty, researchers and students. This year promises to be another milestone of innovation and excellence, building on the momentum we’ve established at The University of Tulsa.

Over the summer, our community reached significant milestones – restating our commitment to research, community service, and innovation. Seven of our faculty here in the college were listed among the highest cited in the world by Stanford University and publisher Elsevier – cementing our dedication to ensuring our students learn from esteemed faculty.

Faculty in The University of Tulsa’s School of Cyber Studies secured funding by the U.S. National Science Foundation (NSF) on revolutionary research for cyber security. Tandy Endowed Chair Tyler Moore, Ph.D.; Research Assistant Professor Andrew Morin, Ph.D.; and Applied Distinguished Professor Neil Gandal, Ph.D., are working to first quantify systemic cyber risk throughout the U.S. economy – minimizing systemic risk across multiple industries.

Assistant Professor of Chemical and Mechanical Engineering Ahmad Amiri, Ph.D., is leading international research on high-performance, scalable energy storage systems. Collaborating with the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), Amiri is advancing batteries and supercapacitors for extreme environments such as deep space and arctic climates. Research such as Amiri’s showcases the progress our faculty continues to foster.

Beyond research, our students are thriving on the national stage. Five of our seniors placed second in the NASA 2025 AgAir Aviation Solutions competition in Palmdale, California, creating a revolutionary drone-powered system that can monitor cattle’s health and improve farm production rates. Mentored by our mechanical engineering professors Will LePage, Ph.D., and Marie Moran, this team demonstrated preparation that defines our programs.

As this academic year begins, we look forward to another year of rigor – a culmination of collaboration, research and innovation. Here’s to another year of transformative impact and achievement!

Warm regards,

Andreas A. Polycarpou
