My media studies professor from my freshman year helped me survive my freshman year. My freshman year, I found myself in a political science class that did not serve me as well as I wanted. At the time, I was a math major with a political science minor. I dropped the class and needed another class to meet the minimum credit requirement. I found myself in some random media studies class about four weeks into the semester with Professor Ben Peters. I was new to his class and had to play catch-up. He aided in the transition to his class and did his best to make sure I did not fall behind. While helping me catch up he would constantly check in with me to make sure I was handling the class well. Throughout the semester, he became the professor I would go to anytime I needed advice. When I was questioning my major, he walked me through the decision process of whether I should change majors.
He made my first semester less stressful than what it could have been. I ended up enjoying his class so much the first time, I ended up switching minors and declared a media studies minor. Professor Peters inspired and pushed his students to be better writers and he always wanted his students to learn. He wanted to watch his students succeed and he would make time to sit with each of his students. Even through Covid, he would make the time to check in with each student to make sure they were all in a safe and okay place.
