TU junior awarded Sumners Foundation scholarship

Lauren Agpoon, a junior majoring in finance and economics at The University of Tulsa, has been awarded a $30,000 scholarship by the Hatton W. Sumners Foundation. Selection criteria are academic excellence, civic engagement and capacity for leadership. Agpoon was one of 55 students nationally to be given a Sumners scholarship in 2020.

“I was ecstatic when I received the scholarship,” Agpoon remarked. “I knew it would aid my journey to law school financially and help me expand my network of friends and mentors.”

“The Sumners scholarship is very prestigious,” said the foundation’s chairman, Jerry Reis. “Sumners Scholars have made significant contributions to their communities, state and country. Following in the footsteps of Congressman Hatton W. Sumners, we are pleased to support students working to improve the political system, address issues through public policy, educate others about civic responsibility, and be active, productive members of society.”

This scholarship will help Agpoon achieve her ambitious goals: “I intend to pursue an M.B.A. and J.D. after graduating from TU, and my grand dream is to be a Supreme Court justice or on the Federal Reserve Board. I am extremely passionate about public policy and truly enjoy what I have learned in undergrad. The programs hosted by the Sumners Foundation will supplement my TU education as I learn from influential speakers, discuss current events and enrich my knowledge about effective leadership.”
