For more than two decades Christian Constanda, Ph. D., D.Sc., has been serving as an esteemed professor of mathematics. His global experience, extensive education, and passion for teaching are shaping the next generation of problem solvers and leaders in STEM fields at The University of Tulsa.

Constanda understands that “mathematics is a word that strikes fear in many hearts and minds.” But students taking his classes appreciate his dedication to making complex mathematical concepts accessible and engaging with humor, stories, puzzles, and trivia.

I am a graduate student with 17 years’ worth of teachers that I’ve encountered. Dr. Constanda may truly be the greatest teacher I’ve ever had,” said one of his graduate students. “The class requires effort, but he is beyond an expert in the subject. He is the type of teacher who makes you want to learn the material. He has found a way to make the driest subject enjoyable.”

Serving as the Charles W. Oliphant Endowed Chair in Mathematical Sciences, Constanda holds doctorate degrees from The Romanian Academy of Sciences, and the University of Strathclyde in Glasgow, UK. He began his journey at UTulsa with two impactful sabbaticals in the 1980s and early 2000s. Impressed by Tulsa’s welcoming community, he accepted a permanent position and has since become a valued member of its academic family.

Mathematics serves as the backbone for many disciplines, particularly in engineering and other STEM-related fields where precise calculations and problem-solving are essential. Constanda emphasizes these interdisciplinary connections, preparing students to apply mathematical principles in diverse contexts, whether they’re developing sustainable energy solutions, improving medical technology, or enhancing data security. His approach highlights that math is not just about numbers—it’s about shaping the skills and knowledge that empower students to make impactful contributions to the world.

“Having Dr. Constanda on our faculty is an incredible asset to the university,” says Andreas A. Polycarpou, Dean of the College of Engineering & Computer Science. “His dedication to teaching and his pioneering research have elevated our mathematics program and inspired countless students to see the power of math in solving real-world problems. His impact resonates not only within the classroom but across our entire academic community.”

Dude, Can You Count? by Christian Constanda

In addition to his teaching, Constanda has made significant contributions to mathematics, particularly in mathematical modeling and applied analysis. With over three dozen books including widely used textbooks and a general audience book of mathematical humor intitled Dude, Can You Count?, 150+ peer-reviewed papers, and leadership in major research projects, he is a respected figure in the international mathematics community. His achievements include the Outstanding Professor Award from the American Society for Engineering Education, highlighting his dedication to advancing both research and education.

In his time at UTulsa, he has witnessed how mathematical reasoning empowers students to tackle everyday challenges, equipping them with analytical skills they carry beyond their studies. His commitment to motivating his students and instilling hard work reflects the principle that mathematics is not just a field of science but a foundation for personal growth and success.
